Expanded and renamed in 1993, Texas Orthopaedic Associates has well established, long-standing roots in the Dallas community.  Many of the physicians in our practice have served as staff or have completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center where the curriculum was based on a system advanced and nurtured by the founders of Dallas orthopaedics.  The practice was started by Dr. Roby Mize, who began practicing orthopaedics in the Dallas area in 1977.  He dedicated his practice to the sound principles of patient care passed down from these early leaders.  To continue providing the highest quality of service to his patients, and to keep pace with the changing trends in health care, he recruited two new physicians to his practice in 1993 – Dr. John Racanelli and Dr. Robert Scheinberg.  The group adopted the name Texas Orthopaedic Associates.  Their practice was further strengthened with the addition of Dr. Michael Champine in 1994, Dr. Timothy Schacherer in 1998, Dr. Ronald Blum and Dr. Rich Vandiver in 1999, Dr. Jim Walter in 2001, and most recently Dr. John Early in 2004.

Initially based at Presbyterian Medical Center in Dallas , Texas Orthopaedic Associates has expanded its full range of orthopaedic services to Presbyterian Hospital of Kaufman, Presbyterian Hospital of Plano , and Presbyterian Hospital of Allen.  In addition to general orthopaedic surgery, many of our surgeons completed extensive training in various orthopaedic sub-specialties with renowned surgeons.

One of Texas Orthopaedic Associates’ strengths is in the field of  Sports Medicine, the sub-specialty for Dr. Racanelli, Dr. Scheinberg, Dr. Vandiver, and Dr. Walter.  Dr. Racanelli received specialized training in Sports Medicine under Dr. David Drez in Lake Charles, Louisiana, while Dr. Scheinberg trained under the tutelage of Dr. Richard Steadman and Dr. Richard Hawkins in Vail, Colorado .  Because of their extensive experience and the team approach they bring to this sub-specialty, Doctors Racanelli and Scheinberg offer a unique insight into the special scope of athletic injuries to the Dallas community.  Dr. Vandiver completed his intensive Sports Medicine training under Dr. Robert Teige in Detroit , Michigan   and shares his expertise with the Presbyterian Hospital of Kaufman community.  Dr. Walter completed his fellowship with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham , Alabama in 2001 and offers the vast knowledge obtained there to the Plano/Allen/Frisco area at Presbyterian Hospital of Plano .

Dr. Champine has brought the latest techniques in Adult Reconstructive Surgery to Texas Orthopaedic Associates.  His approach to surgery, including artificial hip and knee replacement, was formulated under the guidance of Dr. Jerome Wiedel at the University of Colorado .

Dr. Schacherer specializes in Upper Extremity Surgery, including surgery of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand.  He completed a fellowship in this subspecialty under Dr. James Hunter and Dr. Lawrence Schneider in Philadelphia in 1985 and served as chief of the upper extremity service for both the U.S. Navy and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School prior to joining the practice.

Expertise in the area of Foot and Ankle Surgery was added to the practice in 2004 with the recruitment of Dr. Early from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School where he served as the chief of that service since 1994.  His vast knowledge in this field was cultivated from his fellowship in Seattle , Washington under Dr. Sigvard Hansen.

Dr. Ronald Blum has practiced at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas since 1970, serving as President of the Medical Staff from 1987-1988 and as Chairman of the Orthopaedic Department from 1994 through 1998.  He added his vast knowledge and experience in General Orthopaedic Surgery to Texas Orthopaedic Associates in 1999.

Texas Orthopaedic Associates welcomes you to our practice.  We assure you that the principles of compassion, honesty, and dedication – passed down from our predecessors in the Dallas community - still flourish as the cornerstone of the services we offer.  With these principles as our foundation, our goal is to provide each patient with high-quality, state-of-the-art orthopaedic care.
